Dr. Kelly J Shields is a Senior Research Data Scientist in the Enterprise Data & Analytics R&D Team at Highmark Health. Dr. Shields holds a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Shields’ previous translational research interests focused on the intersection of autoimmune disease and premature cardiovascular disease. Her past research and expertise now drives the development of predictive models and interventions for at-risk populations. Additionally, Dr. Shields has developed strong, multi-disciplinary teams to patent an emergency medical device utilizing real-time physiological data and ML to enhance decision making for emergency medical providers, to develop novel acoustic data collection and ML for detection of asthma in children, ascertain fatigue in athletes and clinically quantify progressive gains post-trauma.  Dr. Shields is now leading efforts to develop ML models utilizing radiology images.

Dr. Shields has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters, and her work has been highlighted on journal covers along with multiple national and international conference presentations.
